Snackie Sunday: Gods And Monsters…

Somehow my friend and I got on the subject of Sesame Street the other day.  While talking about the show and all of the memories it holds, I said, “That fucking Big Bird is a total tool, by the way…always has been”.  When my friend agreed with me, I started wondering how many other people out there wished that Big Bird would get struck with the Avian Flu and just uh, erm…go away.  Of course, less radical people would be all polite and just say, “Oh that bird wasn’t exactly my favorite character but I wish him no harm”.  A clue:  he’s a muppet.

With that said, it’s time for….

Snackie Sunday

WHICH SESAME STREET CHARACTER IS/WAS YOUR FAVORITE?
WHICH SESAME STREET CHARACTER DO YOU DISLIKE?

Some of you may not have “issues” with the cute little muppets of Sesame Street, but I’m sorry…I do.  As mentioned before, Big Bird can suck me.  Unlike a lot of people who want to throttle Elmo though, I actually like the little dude.  Of course, I never really paid attention to that whole “Elmo craze” that went on during the last decade.  If I have to pick an absolute favorite, I choose Grover.  That cute little blue monster is funny, speaks correctly, is a total spaz and is the most affectionate, hug loving little dude around.  Besides, he’s also SUPER GROVER so that makes him doubly cool cause yanno, Super Grover is helpful!

To show my deep love for Grover, I’ve attached two very different videos of him.  The first is a “classic Sesame Street” montage and the next is a more recent ditty of Grover appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live (with hunk Tim Daly too!). The second clip cracks my shit up! Enjoy, then tell me all about your Sesame Street likes and dislikes!

Cute Little Furry Monster Kisses,
Me

I hate Elmo. His voice makes me cringe. I don’t mind Snuffy, but it takes him freaking forever to spit anything out. He talks so damn slow! My favorite Muppet, of course, is The Count. One, two, three bats! HA! HA!

The Swedish Chef was always my favorite. Second was Beaker. Wait, do I have the right show? I think I’m thinking of The Muppet Show.

I never liked Oscar. Too grouchy.

Winter: I always liked Snuffy, even though he talks like a pokey little puppy. I mean, if you had to put up with Big Bird’s shit, you’d be drugged up too!

Dave: Cookie monster is my second fave.

SJ: Yes dear, wrong show…*snort*. I like Oscar! His grouchy ass makes the snarky part of my soul go pittah pattah though.

  5. Melanie Says:

Recently, after years of Sesame Street-free children’s programming, I happened on it again and watched it by myself. I am sad to report that I loathe so many of the newer Sesame Street characters that it would be easier to list the few I *do* like: The Count. And poor anal-retentive Bert (I have always wanted to bitch-slap that moron Ernie). Oscar the Grouch. And Grover, but only when he’s SOOOOP-er Grover. Oh, and the little Yup-Yup critters.
That’s it. The rest I would like to set on fire.

    The Count!

I won’t admit how many times in social situations I’ve actually uttered the words “One….two…ah ah ah!” (with the accent, and everything.)

Usually it’s during poker, when numbers are relevant. :)

All I can say - thank goodness my niece doesn’t like SS. She did and I had to watch it…OMG it’s annoying. I don’t know if it always was - but now - painful doesn’t even begin to describe it

    That said- GROVER ROCKS

I like Elmo because well, of all the muppets on Sesame Street, he seemed to actually leave Sesame Street and hang out with some really cool people. I bought the Elmopalooza video for my kids and they love the music on there.

There is enough nerd in me to relate to Bert, and enough air head in me to make Ernie’s logic logical.

But my favorite? Kermit the Frog.

As per my post earlier last week, I’m a big fan of Snuffy. I always had a thing for Cookie Monster as well, and I’m glad that in later episodes they finally confronted his bulimic tendencies.

  11. Karen Says:

I love Bert and Ernie. They seem the most “human” and they are cool because they live on their own.

I don’t like Big Bird. He is just a dork.

Have you ever heard about how people (from foreign countries) use Sesame Street to learn how to speak English better? That’s amazing.

I really liked Snuffleupagus. Oscar annoys me.

I love Grover. I loved Sesame Street as a kid, so I think that I have a warm place in my heart for all of them. Oscar, Ernie, Grover and Cookie Monster were my favs. Though I was quite sad when Snuffy finally could be seen by everyone, WTF? But yes, Big Bird is a bit needy. Why was he always having sleep overs in his nest… what was he after?

  14. kat Says:

i’ve always had a thing for kermit the frog. oh god, does that make me a furry?

I never really had problems with Sesame Street. I always loved Cookie Monster. Did anybody see Cookie Monster on the Colbert Report last week? Awesome!

For me, I was always skeeved out by Mr. Rogers. Super creepy. Did anybody else feel like he had kind of a child-molester vibe?

I cried buckets when Jim Henson died… I remember the day just as vividly as when the Shuttle blew up…

I could never pick a favorite… I love them all… I have Sesame Street T-Shirts and Muppet Books… I have nothing but love for all the muppets…

and I will admit… it kinda tweaked my emotions to see you speak badly of Big Bird… and then I read “He’s a Muppet” and composed myself….

  19. Stacey Says:

Grover and Cookie Monster were my absolute favorites. When I worked in childcare I had a Cookie Monster t-shirt and a Super Grover t-shirt. (The Captain eventually convinced me to toss them when I stopped working with kids. Bastard.)

I’d like to punt Elmo. He irritates the ever-loving shit out of me.

  20. Bec Says:

The absolute coolest thing my Dad ever bought me was an Oscar hand puppet. I loved that thing and still have it… somewhere… I think.

My friend at uni (during the craze) had a Punk Elmo complete with nose piercing and blue mohican… but ‘Elmo woves you’ will make me go a little Hulk like.

Favourite though? The Count. When drunk I will do a rubbish impression that I thing is brilliant.

Sesame Street came along a little after my time . . . so I never really developed a distaste for any of the characters. I think they are cute. And I loved the MUPPETS, except maybe ANIMAL. He’s a little annoying, maybe.

Took a few liberties with this prompt, but I still think it fits.

Elmo is like nails on a chalkboard for me. And Big Bird, I don’t remember much about him. So I guess he wasn’t favorite. Just big, yellow and went well with gravey.

I tried this earlier, but it wouldn’t post, so let’s go again…..

Loved: Kermit. The first, the only, the one that started it all, more or less. The frog that let us all know…”It’s Not Easy Being Green”.

Hated: Guy Smiley. The rowdy game show host that screamed EVERYTHING! Ugh. My mom hated him too because when I was younger, after he came on, I’d start running around screaming EVERYTHING.

If you really hate Big Bird, then I guess you were rooting for the hurricane episode when B.B. got his nest blown away! Bwah ha ha ha ha!

Grover always makes me think of college. I had a roomie who had a dog. Needless to say when said dog was pissed off with one of us, he would do damage to our personal stuff.

I will never forget the image of my Paddington bear lying on the floor naked because his clothing had been shredded off of him. Oh the humanity! All because I had decided to go to a club.

A week later I was sitting in my room and heard a noise in the hall. The dog was trotting down the hall with my roommate’s Grover in his mouth. What had Grover done to anyone? Not a thing. I told the dog to drop the Grover.

Oh, and when I was four or five my grandmother bought me the Sesame Street soundtrack for Christmas. I still love “Rubber Duckie” and “Being Green.”

Apparently, when I was two, I had a crush on Bob from Sesame Street. He’d appear on the screen and I’d run up to the TV shouting “Bob! Bob!”

However, I would have to list Grover as my favourite SStreet character. With the Count a very, very, very close second. So close.

I never hated the bird. And I loved Snuffy until he was no longer imaginary and everyone could see him. Same with Cookie Monster until he went on his health kick. Oscar was cranky, but I’ve always kind of liked him for that.

Elmo however drives me batty. I find it hard to believe there are redeeming qualities to that red monstrosity…
