Snackie Sunday: The Caffeination Station

A long time ago, when interviewing for a job at a Wellness Center, I was told that getting tired mid-afternoon could actually be a sign of dehydration. Therefore, instead of reaching for my caffeinated beverage of choice, I should reach for a tall drink of delicious water and forget about the other stuff. Uh, right…sure thing. While I definitely believe in super-hydration and know that yes, a lack of water can make you tired, I’m never ever ever ever ever giving up my caffeinated elixir of choice! Yanno, especially since I already drink about 100 oz. of water a day anyhow. Besides, I’m caffeine’s whore and I’m not ashamed to admit it.

Of course, it’s time for…..

WHAT IS YOUR CAFFEINATED BEVERAGE OF CHOICE?

Coffee? Tea? Me? Soda? Caffeinated Waters? Something completely crazy like those mixed energy/caffeine drinks? Tell me, please because the whore in me just *has* to know! My number one “go to” fix for caffeine is coffee, hands down. I’m the type of person that drinks morning and afternoon coffee almost every damned day. I love diet soda but I’m not sure it ever really does much for me in the “alertness” department. And tea? Well quiet honestly, meh….not a big lover of tea. The other day, I completely spazzed out and had a positive mood swing after drinking one of those energy drinks but holy crap, they are somewhat scary-powerful! So yeah, coffee for me…generally with just a bit of milk and the yellow stuff (Splenda)!

I am totally fussy about my coffee. I usually only drink it in the morning and then switch to diet Dr Pepper. However, since I don’t seem to be one of the peeps who is kept awake by caffeine, I can drink it any time! It’s one of my comfort foods that puts me to sleep with its warmth actually.

So I have to have a completely bold dark roast. I like my coffee very strong, very sweet, and mindblowing. I use real sugar (can’t handle the fake stuff in coffee) but I’m not as picky about cream.

I do like tea, but I’m an Earl Grey girl. Or oolong. Not liking much else tea-wise. I often drink tea when my throat hurts or I’m sick. I use real sugar in hot tea. In iced tea, I’m a Sweet N Low girl. A guy once told me that girls who use Sweet N Low A LOT, have certain bodily…erm juices… taste sweeter. Since I’m not a pussy licker, I wouldn’t know for sure. LOL

I also drink diet Dr Pepper with caffeine. There’s only a few diet sodas I can handle. That’s the only caffeinated one.

  2. adena Says:

Can’t do coffee. Love the smell, but it makes my stomach oogy.

Dr. Pepper is my vice. And regular Coke (The cola, not the powder.)

    Tea? Black tea. Darjeeling, mainly.

  3. Iron Fist Says:

Living in Portland I am a bit of a coffee snob, preferring either a well made double-shot dry cappuccino. (If some asshole barista asks whether or not I want whip cream on my cappuccino, I know I’m in the wrong place.)

That being said — I am drinking a lot of Japanese green tea these days. Loose leaf, I brew it myself. I guess I’m a bit of a tea snob, too. Jeez.

  4. RiceWenchie Says:

Must. Have. Caffeine. …I don’t have a blood system… I have a caffeine system!

Too much blood in my caffeine system makes for a very groggy, grumpy Wenchie! :???:

I cannot do coffee at all. I’ve tried and no way.

I am unashamedly addicted to Mountain Dew. I supplement it with juice, flavored water, and iced tea (usually a mix of regular tea and something else like vanilla or raspberry). Water is OK if I am really thirsty, but I need something with flavor.

  8. libragirl Says:

I hate coffee. I only drink tea if desperate, I have to put like 7 sugars in a tiny little teacup.
but Soda- I have usually one soda a day at work, unless I have a headache, then I drink 2 plus a gazillion oz of water.

  9. Princess of the Universe Says:

I don’t drink coffee at all, and I love iced tea - but my fave is decaf.
So I guess I would have to say diet coke.

I actually do drink water all day, and every once in awhile, a diet soda. But I don’t drink coffee. Everyone thinks I’m weird.

  11. HoosierGirl Says:

I adore coffee, but the caffeine is bad for my stomach. So I try to limit myself to one or two a week. Now it’s cold iced tea, preferably decaffeinated. And I’ll throw a water in there, just to keep it light.

Glad you’re recovering from your wild weekend.

Coffee in the morning, afternoon and even night. Give me crack and I’d sell it for some Starbucks. I used to be able to drink “Folgers” or store brand, but NOW I’m hooked and addicted to the Starbucks blends. Has to be a strong blend, though, like Verona or something like that - and black, no cream or sugar. Sometimes, if I really need a kick, I’ll get them to add some Expresso shots to the Bold coffee. Good thing Starbucks lets you get free refills now, it saves me a ton. Just hope my heart doesn’t explode now.

  13. diane Says:

Coffee in the morning, Diet Coke (preferably Coke Zero) in the afternoon. I used to drink a lot more tea…but…well, bad habits die hard. Once my stomach was able to handle the hard stuff again, my will was broken! :(
By the way, just got around to reading your post from yesterday and hope your wrist/tummy/whatever else is feeling better!

  14. Nat Says:

Coffee. Coffee. Coffee. (Personal fave is Bridgehead’s Nicaraguan Dark (Fair Trade and organic.)

Afternoon tea is usually herbal and not caffeinated. But I do love the odd diet coke.

  15. suze Says:

My caffeinated beverage of choice depends on the time of day. AM - coffee, black. PM - diet coke, or coffee, but not black. If I drink coffee in the afternoon, it has to be mixed with frothy hot milk. In the evening if I have caffeine, it’s usually a black coffee again, with dessert - but that is a rare occurrence.

  16. Angie Says:

Coffee, coffee, coffee - just like you with some milk and splenda (or if I’m feeling really crazy sugar-free caramel coffee syrup)! And I LOVE my cuisinart grind and brew coffemaker - it’s my favorite appliance.

I usually have my afternoon diet coke with some popcorn, but it’s the coffee that I love. My children knew Starbucks by sight before they recognized any other stores, including the grocery store - am I a great mom or what?

  17. Jennifer Says:

Total diet coke whore. I hate that I am, but…I am. I gave it up during both pregnancies and should have stayed off. Love it. Sometimes I drink it first thing in the am. Can’t do coffee because I loathe hot drinks, but I love coffee flavored ice cream and those rich expensive frozen coffee drinks. But diet coke for me.

  18. Sybil Law Says:

I used to pump diet coke into my veins… but I quit when my husband quit smoking. It took me a year longer. I miss the diet coke burn.

Now, I prefer coffee. A little cream, a little real sugar. My son knew Starbucks before the grocery store too. Though, we live in Seattle. (He even knows vivaci, which is much yummier than Starbucks)

  21. Mrs. F Says:

I drink coffee almost daily, but not as much as I used to drink it when I was a smoker.

On the days when I have to work I have to have Sugar Free Rock Stars.

I throw in the occasional Diet Pepsi, but I try not to drink too much since I hear it is loaded with rat poison, err, I mean aspertame…

  27. MB Says:

I’m pretty sure I financed the remodeling of the local Dunkin Donuts with my caffeine habit. I would buy an extra large coffee in the morning, a large after lunch and another one after dinner. I would also consume about 3 diet cokes in between.

I cut down on the financing of DD by drinking tea in the morning (one black tea bag, one green tea bag, drop of milk and one splenda) and try to get through the day without giving in to the urge to hit the local DD.

I can’t say the switch has made me feel any better but I guess it is better for me. I still treat myself to the wonderful coffee beans but it is more of a treat now than a regular staple.

After the weekend I had, I’m going to hit up Dunkins on the way to work today though.

I hope the caffeine helped your hangover. :)

    Coffee with half/half.

But, I started drinking Enviga’s. They are energy drinks but without all the b vitamins and jacked up amounts of caffeine. It’s carbonated green tea with the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee. Comes in three flavors.

  30. Avitable Says:

I inject Diet Coke directly into my eyeballs.

  31. Lisa Says:

Fall and Winter, coffee in the morning and tea in the afternoon.

Spring and Summer, Diet Coke from sun-up to sun-down.

  32. radioactive tori Says:

I used to drink coffee all day long. I don’t really like coffee plain, so I added a ton of flavored creamer. I also gained some weight so I stopped drinking it. I love those coffee energy drinks like the Monster Java or whatever it is called but I have to be careful because if I haven’t eaten enough, they make me feel really shaky and sick. If I spread out drinking one through an entire day I can keep my energy up all day, but then I am drinking gross warm milky coffee towards the end of the day. I suppose a sane person would pour it into a glass or something and keep the rest in the fridge so it wouldn’t get all warm, right?

I ADORE coffee, hot or cold. Same with tea. Just don’t mess them up with anything nutty or fruity, UGH. I do like spiced tea, like chai. But fruity teas? NO. Nutty coffees? NO.

I like Coke and Dr. Pepper too, but hate how they bloat your stomach.

  35. MB Says:

I forgot to mention I only like my coffee or tea HOT. I hate them both cold and I hate any flavorings unless, of course, it’s alcohol.

Ok. I like caffeine in almost all of it’s forms. I am a diet coke drinker mostly. I also love coffee, but it has to be pretty. Lots of cream, flavors, swirled together to cover up the coffee flavor. Sweet southern iced-tea is also a favorite. A caffeine whore…just like you.
