One good thing about having been so sick (we’re up to a possible ear infection now, woohoo!) is that I’ve had time to do things that I normally would not have. Both Friday and Saturday, I spent some time organizing my electronic files and backing everything up to my external drive. This took some time because well…I am prone to save everything to the desktop while I am working on it. However, because I hate a cluttered desktop, I save it to a file called “to sort”. I’ve lied to myself and promised that I’d clean that out once a week but uh…let’s just say that it had been about four months since my last file scrub-a-dub-dub! Anydiddle, while going through old files and organizing them, I came across some pictures from 2006, which included the Queen Mary adventure I took with Foo and Karl (among others). Every time I think of that day out, I am reminded of how I freaked the fuck out in the tiny elevator that moved as slow as molasses. It was so claustrophobic in there that I started crying. Yes, real tears of I have no idea what…maybe anxiety? Luckily, I was with people that all knew me well enough to understand that I am certifiably bat-shit crazy.
This brings me to…

DO YOU HAVE ANY PHOBIAS (OR ANXIETY-TYPE FEARS?)
I found a great list of phobias at Wikipedia as well as on About.com’s Phobia List. I was floored when I saw how many there truly are! I tried not to get all “mental hypochondriac” when reading them, yanno…just cause I wanted one with a cool name! However, I have to say that my biggest phobia is pretty standard. It’s Caustrophobia. I always thought I had a general fear of elevators (which I do) but I think that boils down to being afraid to be stuck in a confined space. How do I know this is true? Hell, I *refuse* to sit in the back seat of a two door car…that’s how much I can’t stand being “trapped”. Hrm, pardon me while I scan the list to see if I have any others…*whistles*. Oooh, I know - Erotophobia! Oh wait, I’m the exact *opposite* of that, haha! I really can’t see any others that apply to me except, I have a skeevy fear of snakes. What’s that called? Ooooh, “Ophidiophobia”…how fancy!
Anyway, your turn…have any fears, phobias, or anything else that makes your skin crawl? And hey, no judgment here at ALL! Hell, I used to have anxiety disorder and extreme Agoraphobia. I didn’t leave my house for a year. Yes, ME! Can you believe?
They’re Coming To Take Us Away (HO HO HEE HEE HA HA) Kisses,
Me

OK. Now I’m pissed. I searched the list for my main phobia and it wasn’t there. Me? I have issues with tunnels. I think it’s a result of that whole Caldecott thing years ago. Anywho if I have to drive through a really long tunnel, I end up nearly hyperventilating. I guess they would say it’s a form of claustrophobia. And I guess that explains my dislike of places that are too crowded. I really hate when folks get in my personal space. If a place is too crowded, that is sure to happen.

I have a fear of ventriloquist dummies. They are the only things that really scare me. You could hang me upside down from a tall building or put a tarantula in my face and I wouldn’t even blink but put one of those demon spawn VDs anywhere near me and I will lose my sanity. That’s the main reason I don’t work in the theatre.

I’ve never confided my biggest phobia/fear to anyone but my wife. And it’s gonna stay that way, mister!
I’m sure I’m going to end up paying some karmic lump-sum payment for not “Facing” the fear, but I’m ok with that for now.

Seriously, I am extremely claustrophobic…extremely.

I have fears of:
Bugs
Falling down escalators
Heights
I am sure I have others that I can’t think of because I just woke up.

I didn’t look at the list…’cause I don’t want to know if I’m more of a freak than I already think I am! Here’s my list:
Claustrophobia (I sooo get the backseat of a 2door car thing.)
Fear of tunnels
Fear of bridges
Fear of mice/rats
Fear of heights
Fear of Avitable
I’m a wuss.

I don’t have an actual phobias, but there are plenty of things I don’t like: bridges (or being caught on one in traffic - I am paranoid it’s going to buckle); crowds (people are especially stupid in crowds, so I stand near exits in case something like a fire breaks out); sleeping bags (my own form of claustrophobia)…. That’s all I can really think of right now.

Oh yes, I have a fear of heights. I know a lot of people do, too. But even the 5th rung on a ladder, I get the willies.
I’m useless when it comes to doing anything related to the roof of the house.

I’m weird: I’m not afraid of dying, heights, public speaking, or most of the things that most normal people fear.
I am afraid of bees–though I’ve never been stung by one–and any type of insect that jumps (i.e., crickets, grasshoppers) freaks me out, too.
September 21st, 2008 at 9:40 am
Heights, but not airplane heights, for some reason. I can look out the window of an airplane, and be totally fine.
But, put me on a lookout point on a mountain, or on the edge of a pier looking down into the ocean, etc, and my anxiety shoots through the roof. I guess I hate “unstable” heights.
And spiders. *shudder*

I didn’t see mine one the list, but I’m terrified of ferris wheels. I’m sure it’s a little bit of being afraid of heights, but probably also a fear of falling. The last one I went on was at California Adventure and I cried like a baby. I was holding on to my ex’s jeans so tight. I almost wouldn’t even let him move over to the other side of the car to take my picture. (It’s not a very pretty picture by the way.)
Marty - I don’t even go past the 2nd rung of the ladder. Any higher than that scares the crap out of me.
I’d say that I’m also afraid of public speaking and all types of bugs/spiders, but I don’t know that I have a phobia of either thing.
September 21st, 2008 at 10:36 am
Selma: Oh my DOG! I forgot all about my aforementioned fear of ventriloquist dummies!
Steph: I hate ferris wheels too! I’m not afraid of any other heights but those things scare the living shit out of me….I especially hate it when people rock the freaking carts. That one at California Adventure that has the buckets that also move along that squiggly line? I run past it when I go!
September 21st, 2008 at 10:42 am
I’m afraid of heights(like freakishly so… I am uncomfortable standing on a chair), and agoraphobic(I know that isn’t the right word for it… I am afraid of isolated, non-urban places… the kind of places with no roads and no people) which means I am the antithesis of a claustrophobic.
I mean, those Japanese commuter hotels that are just a square shaped slot in the wall… I could totally dig that.

Fear of large crowds… which is listed as agoraphobia… but I am not afraid of open spaces… more crowded spaces with too many people. I hate festivals for that reason and the grocery store on the Wednesday before thanksgiving.
Fear of escalators and stairs that are not solid..I hate those metal mesh stairs. Those stairs have always been a problem but I wasn’t scared of escalators until I was pregnant. It stuck unfortunately. Oh, and docks. I’m afraid of the gaps.
Also, I am afraid of really high heights if I am out in the open, but in a car, plane, building and I’m fine. Looking out from the deck of the space needle, eiffel tower, etc. makes me dizzy and then I worry I will fall.
Ok, I fall in the neurotic category… because I could go on.

• The Dark (well-documented)
• Birds (well-documented)
• Dark figures (I could *know* it was Bret, and I’d still freak out)
• Confinement or restriction of movement
• Underwater open spaces
• Falling
• Being buried alive
• A mysterious bacteria wiping out all the coffea plants in the entire world. Sometimes I wake up at night in a cold sweat worrying about it.
I’m not afraid of anything creepy-crawly unless I’m in danger of getting bitten. I think reptiles of all kinds are beautiful.

I am terrified of squishy things! I reached into a bag of potatoes last night and one finger went right thru a rotted one and I was freaking and gagging and trying deperately to wash it off without looking at my hand!
My first attempt at cooking a turkey for the family at Christmas had me gagging and crying and calling my dad to come pull the innards out!
He drove 10 kms to do that for me. I didnt eat much that year!!
Oh yea, heights freak me out too!

i don’t have a paralyzing fear of much, although i have a healthy respect for many things (like i don’t shake when i see an alligator, but i won’t go standing next to one either).
that being said, movies designed to scare me always scare me and i refuse to watch them. i have no desire to freak myself out. therefore i won’t be going to a haunted cemetery at halloween or anything either.

I don’t like elevators. In fact, if there is a taking the stairs option and it’s less than four storeys up, I’m taking it. It’s more of a fear of getting caught in the elevator. it’s a how do I get out of this … in general things I can’t get out of scare me a lot.

I’m rather claustrophobic and a little afraid of heights. The heights thing used to be a lot worse–I think it gets better the more I fly. Also open heights are wayyyy scarier to me than enclosed heights (think Eiffel Tower vs. Sears Tower).
I was also pleased to find I’m not the only weirdo out there afraid of frogs. Apparently batrachophobia is a fear of amphibians.

I’m claustrophobic. In fact, at the Obama rally, there were so many people jammed in that I decided to retreat to an area that had a little more breathing room.

My one actual phobia has a lame ass name, a misleading name, a name that need to wash behind its ears:
Bathmophobia
This is the fear of steep slopes and stairs. I (not entirely) overcame the stairs part of that when I was a little kid without much trouble at all*, but I never expect to be able to deal with steep slopes. Terror, absolute fucking paralyzing terror.
*I still occasionally have weird dreams about descending narrowing stairs without railings. I think there needs to be a name for the fear of traversing steep descents on foot, which is the more accurate thing for me.

I have a fear of sidewalk grates. Will not walk on them if there is ANY way around them. My kids used to like to “jump” across them just to watch me go pale. I am always *certain* that they will collapse and I will die - even if they are only a few inches deep! I looked for a technical name for them and found a couple of incidents of people randomly falling through them in New York the last couple of years. I feel vindicated! LOL
I also have an extreme phobia of those little creepy white bugs that can be found in rotting things (I refuse to even name them). I cannot see them, watch anything on TV about them (no crime shows for me) or even stand to hear their names. ugh. Terrible!
September 26th, 2008 at 9:29 am
I’m rather afraid of spiders, of heights when not standing on a solid surface with a railing (I know, how specific, but if it’s a balcony with a railing that’s high up, I’m fine. If it’s a swaying bridge or a ferris wheel or ski lift chair, terrified), of the dark and of crazy, masked, horror-film murderers. Honestly, I know how completely irrational that last one is, but it takes just a picture of that stupid Scream mask to give me nightmares for a week…
