Are You There, God? It’s Me, Dean Winchester - Supernatural Recap

Thank God that the new TV season is upon us. This is my first post for the newly resurrected Snackie Teevee and I’ll be covering “Supernatural,” along with a few other shows.

So last week, somebody rescued Dean from hell, and Dean literally rose up out of his grave. Turns out it was this big badass named Castiel, who claimed to be an angel of the Lord.

This week, the episode started with a hunter we’ve never seen before getting killed off by a ghost. In fact, there’s a series of hunter killings that get Bobby and Sam and Dean involved.

Hunter Death

Sam heads out to a corner store at one point and meets up with the new Ruby, who asks him flat out, “Is it true that an angel saved Dean from hell?”

Sam says, yeah, we think so, and Ruby turns around and says, “Goodbye, Sam.”

The new Ruby

When Sam asks her what the hell, she says, “These are angels. I’m a demon. They smite first and ask questions later.” She’s scared and tells Sam to be careful.

So the gang - Sam, Dean, and Bobby - head over to a hunter friend of Bobby’s because she’s  not answering her phone. They find her dead, chest ripped open, surrounded by a line of salt. Not good. None of them has ever seen a ghost do this.

Sam goes to get gas in the car and runs into Victor - yeah, dead dude - in the bathroom.

He’s pissed and blames Sam for his death. Sam tries to defend himself but Victor starts beating the shit out of him, slamming him against lockers and kicking the crap out of him. Until Dean breaks in and shoots him up with a shotgun full of salt.

This turns into a pattern, with ghosts popping up that Sam and Dean have “failed to save.” This includes a pair of little girl ghosts who gang up on Bobby, again for failing to save them. While Sam and Dean are looking for Bobby, Meg shows up, pissed at Dean. Remember her from season 2?

She starts beating the crap out of Dean, who seems powerless to stop her. “You threw me off a building!” she shouts. Then she says that her family was destroyed after she disappeared, getting possessed by that demon. And after she died - at the hands of Sam and Dean - her baby sister killed herself. Finally, Dean pulls out a gun. Meg laughs, telling him bullets won’t kill her. Dean sees this weird brand-like mark on her hand.

He says, “I’m not shooting you,” aims for the ceiling and shoots at an old chandelier, which falls to the ground and turns Meg into a puff of smoke. “Iron,” he says.

Meanwhile Sam finds Bobby in a trashed-out car outside, with the two girl ghosts getting ready to kill him. They fight, Sam shoots some salt at them and they disappear.

The three hunters make off for Bobby’s panic room, totally made out of iron - iron with salt embedded in it. And they read through as many books as they can, searching for the brand symbol they’ve seen on the ghosts’ hands. Bobby finally finds the symbol.

Turns out the symbol belongs to “The Witnesses,” one of the signs of the Apocalypse in Revelation. Somebody has cast a spell to bring back all these vengeful ghosts - The Witnesses - in an attempt to spark the end of the world.

They figure out a spell to kill all these ghosts, but have to leave the Panic Room to do it. Lots of ghosts popping up to stop them, lots of shotgun blasts filled with salt, but they finally get the job done. There’s a huge blue blast and all the ghosts are killed.

Castiel

Castiel

Castiel comes to Dean in a dream, tells him he did good work on the Witnesses and Dean goes off on him. Where the hell were YOU? Why didn’t you help us with that crap? Castiel says there’s a bigger picture and 6 of his “brothers” were killed in the past week. I’d love to know what the hell can kill these “angels” since nothing seems to affect them.

Dean

Dean

Dean continues to yell at Castiel and Castiel basically says, “Listen, we have limited resources. I can’t perch on your shoulder the whole time when we have many battles going on right now. I pulled you out of hell, and I can put you back, so you’d better start showing me some respect.”

Then he tells him there are 66 “seals” or signs of the Apocalypse and the Witnesses were just 1 of those 66. “Think of them as locks.”

“What happens when all the seals are broken?” Dean asks.

“Lucifer is free to walk the earth again.”

“Lucifer? I thought he was just a myth told in demon Sunday school.”

“Three days ago, you thought *I* was a myth, too,” Castiel says.

And that’s basically how the episode ends, with Dean waking up and asking Sam if he believes in Lucifer.

Fun episode overall. I’m not sure yet if I like the direction the show is taking, though they’ve got to keep raising the stakes somehow, so it makes sense for God and angels to come into the equation.

I’ve been watching this show from the beginning and will continue to watch, since it’s kind of like a rock and roll version of The X-Files. There are the standalone episodes and then there are the multi-episode arcs that tell the larger story. I like how they mix it up with a little of both and I hope they keep it that way.

I also like that they’re including Bobby a lot more. I like that dude.

How about you? What did you think of this episode?

I think that I do like where they are going this season, actually. I’m sure there will be twists and turns down the road but looking at it realistically, they already fought the “big bad” last season and they need to go somewhere deeper. I do like that the angels are not portrayed as the guardians sitting on their shoulders but as warriors for God. Also, they can do a lot with the breaking of the 66 seals, etc.

I have a very strange feeling however that Dean and Sam are going to end up on opposite sides of this battle…we still have to learn a lot more about why he was bestowed his powers, blah blah.

And yes for more Bobby….also, I like the new Ruby.

I’m with Hilly- I think the reason that God brought Dean back is to deal with Sam and his new powers. You can tell it’s going to be a bad scene before it’s all over when Dean find out about Sam’s abilities.

    Mmmmm Jensen…

Princess of the Universes last blog post..OMFG!!
